How to Solve Clogged Drain Issues: Causes, Prevention, and Tips

Does this sound familiar? You turn the water on, only to watch it sit stagnant in your sink. Chances are, you have a clogged drain

This common household occurrence is more than a small nuisance — it can signify a larger issue with your plumbing, but it can also be something as simple as hair or food stuck in your drain.

To prevent this from occurring, it’s important to understand what causes clogged drains, so you can take precautionary measures to stop this from happening. Here are some essential DIY drain cleaning tips and tricks, along with common causes of clogged drains.

Causes of Clogged Drains

The cause of clogged drains varies. There are, however, some common reasons you may need drain unclogging, such as the following:

  • Hair: Hair is a common culprit of clogged drains, especially in the bathroom. Do you brush your hair over the sink? If so, you may want to install a mesh cover over your drain to prevent hair from clogging your pipes or consider brushing your hair in a different room.
  • Food: This is common in kitchen sinks, which is why you need a mesh drain cover in this sink as well. Additionally, you should scrape food particles from plates into the trash before putting them in the sink or dishwasher, working to prevent clogs. Always avoid putting grease down the drain, regardless of its consistency.
  • Hard Water: The source of your clogged drain may be due to hard water. You may even notice that certain soaps, such as castile soap, interact with hard water and cause clogs. Hard water contains a lot of minerals that can lead to clogs, so consider installing a water softener.

These are just a few common reasons you may need plumbing maintenance, although there are less common reasons for clogged drains.

Check Your Tree Roots

You may not realize it, but tree roots can infiltrate your pipes and lead to clogs. Be mindful of where you plant trees and if you can’t find an easy reason for clogged drains, consider having everything inspected, especially your sewer lines

Are There Foreign Objects in Your Drain?

For example, did jewelry make its way down the drain? What about toys or makeup? Any foreign object can clog drains, which is why you need professionals to assess the issue.

Your Pipes May Be Damaged

As pipes age, they can experience a variety of issues. This includes:

  • Corrosion
  • Cracks
  • Misalignment

You’ll more commonly notice this if your home is older. In this instance, you may need your plumbing system replaced. Although this might sound initially intimidating, it’s better than constantly paying for costly leak repairs

Preventing Drain Clogs

You can prevent clogs with DIY drain cleaning, along with a few other items. Here are some maintenance suggestions to consider.

Use Drain Screens in All Sinks

This includes bathrooms, kitchens, and showers/tubs. No matter what drain you’re using, a drain screen can prevent hair and other debris from becoming lodged

Never Pour Grease Down the Sink

As the grease cools, it hardens, leading to clogs. Instead, let the grease cool in the pan before scraping it into a sealed container. Never touch hot grease, as this can scald you.

Maintain Your Drains

The best way to do this is by flushing them regularly. Never use Drano, as it’s a toxic chemical that’s dangerous to you, your family, your pipes, and the environment.

Instead, flush your drains with vinegar and baking soda. Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda in your drain and then add half a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for half an hour and follow with hot water.

Maintain Your Trees

Routine tree maintenance is ideal for preventing clogs caused by tree roots. Arborists can help you prune and maintain trees, working to prevent root systems from affecting your home’s plumbing.

Schedule Routine Plumbing Inspections

Instead of waiting for pipes to clog, schedule routine inspections of your plumbing system so professionals can spot potential issues before they arise. This can prevent clogs and other damage to your home’s plumbing.
